The AFFCF was founded in 1983 by concerned members of Arizona's Foster Care Review Boards, who realized that the State foster system was simply not able to do enough to help re-build the lives of children placed in foster care. Unfortunately, the State is only able to provide these children with the basic necessities of life, such as food, clothing, and medical care. It is left to the individual foster families to provide anything beyond those essentials. As much as they would like to, most foster families simply cannot afford to do more. The more than 6,500 children currently in foster care in Arizona depend on the AFFCF to provide that something extra to help raise their self-esteem and allow something closer to a normal childhood.
Our first grant was made in December 1984, and provided music lessons for a little boy. Since that time we have granted over $2 million dollars to 9,000 foster children. In 2002 alone, we granted more than $166,000 to 919 children for bicycles, music lessons, dance lessons, cheerleading equipment, karate lessons, college scholarships, and an almost endless list of simple childhood needs. |
