Who can receive aid from the AFFCF?

The AFFCF provides assistance to present permanent wards of the State of Arizona. As a rule, we do not award grants to adopted children or temporary wards. On a case-by-case basis, we will provide assistance to past permanent wards of the State.

Must the child currently reside in Arizona in order to receive aid?

No. Every year, a portion of our grant money goes to children who are wards of the State of Arizona, but who currently reside in other states.

Can children who are no longer wards of the State still receive aid from the AFFCF?

Yes, but aid to former wards of the State is generally limited to dental and medical expenses, apartment set-ups, and scholarships.

What kinds of things will the AFFCF fund?

The AFFCF provides funds to meet the needs of foster children that are not otherwise funded by the State or by other programs. The AFFCF provides grants for such items as, but not limited to:

  • Little league, soccer, football, and other team sport fees, shoes, and uniforms
  • Sports lessons, equipment, and league fees
  • Dance and music lessons
  • Musical instrument rentals and purchase (after a minimum of 1 year of rental)
  • Sports and other lesson renewals up to one year

  • Class trips
  • Letter jackets
  • Prom clothes, tickets, and photos up to a $300 maximum

What kinds of things will the AFFCF generally not fund?

The AFFCF's goal is to benefit individual foster children, not foster homes or group homes. Therefore, the AFFCF will only fund items that directly benefit the foster child. In the case of physical objects, the AFFCF will only fund items which the child can take along if he or she is moved into a different housing situation. Generally, the AFFCF will not fund:
  • Christmas or birthday gifts
  • Furniture or home fixtures
  • Debt relief
  • Household bills or utility expenses
  • Scholarships to students over 24
  • Services or benefits that are available from other public, private, or governmental agencies, such as day care, pre-school, counselling services, wheel chairs, and van lifts

Does the AFFCF provide college scholarships?

Yes. The AFFCF earmarks specific funds each year to award college, university, and trade school scholarships. Funds are awarded on a first come, first served basis, giving preference to those students already receiving scholarship assistance from us.

For more information on scholarship opportunities for foster children, please see the Scholarships section.

What is the source of money for these grants and scholarships?

The single largest source of money for the AFFCF grants is the money raised by the Volunteer Non-Profit Service Association's annual book sale. For a list of individuals and groups who have donated money or services to the AFFCF, see the Friends & Donors section.
